Peru information and advice from Smart Traveller

Exercise a high degree of caution in Peru because of the high levels of serious crime.

Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.

Avoid any demonstrations and protests throughout Peru given their potential to turn violent.

You are advised not to travel to the areas of Peru bordering Colombia because of the risk of kidnapping by narcotics traffickers. We also advise you not to travel to areas bordering Ecuador, other than official border crossings, due to the presence of unexploded ordnance and landmines.

Isolated areas in the Southern Highlands including San Martin, Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Ucayali, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Apurimac, may still harbour sympathisers of the Shining Path rebel group. Australians should maintain a high level of vigilance in these areas.

The Australian government and Smart Traveller recommend appropriate insurance information if you are travelling overseas and to ensure that you are properly covered with comprehensive travel insurance. The cost of medical, dental and let alone the inconvenience of the lost luggage can ruin your holiday.
